Sunrise News - November 2011

November is here and with it festivals and celebrations marking plentiful harvests (hopefully)!  The full Food Bank Donation barrel shows how all of you care about helping others in need.  A new barrel will be delivered on Monday, November 28th in hopes that we can fill it one more time before the winter break. Thank you for your generosity!

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to discuss with your children what it means to be thankful. The staff at Sunrise is thankful for our wonderful parents who support us, the children who fill our days with joy, and our beautiful campus showing the signs of fall. We hope your families are healthy and happy as we enter the season of being thankful and giving to others.

Classroom News

Bonsai

The month of October brought ghoulish fun to the toddler room! We decorated our room with pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, and bats, made pumpkin pancakes and discovered "what's inside a pumpkin".  We ended the month enjoying the Halloween carnival put on by the upper elementary students- what a treat! Each child seemed to enjoy him/herself and the upper elementary children were so kind and gentle helping the toddlers through the carnival. Click here to read on....

Willow

As the wind blows, temperatures cook and leaves fall, the Willow class has been diving into the study of bones, pumpkin life cycle and making friends. We have had a wonderful October, with our unit of study focusing on the human skeleton.  Children explored the skull, jaw, ribs, femur, ulna, radius, fibula and tibia to enhance their understanding of the human body. Children were able to relate these new terms to fit into their daily lives as Lauren did when exclaiming to her mom, "My tibia is hurting!"  Click here to read on...

Mulberry

The Mulberry class had a lot of memorable experiences during October.  We began by preparing for our October 21st Pumpkin Hunt. Using old clothes and newspapers, the children made fabulous scarecrows to use in our own pumpkin patch. Thanks to Katie Roberts and Mache' Indelicato for carrying out this fun project! The scarecrows looked so great, we had to share them with the upper elementary for the Halloween carnival decorations! Click here to read on...

Maple

We are all settling nicely into the classroom routine. Over the last few months we have learned so much about how to be responsible and joyful learners in the Lower Elementary community.  Our Halloween celebration was lovely thanks to so many parent volunteers and the great work of the Upper Elementary students and their teachers. We are writing thank you notes this week and next to express our gratitude and to give special mention to our favorite activities. We hope you won't mind if you receive a thank you note with phonetic spelling (we think its part of their charm and the actual process of thinking of what to say is quite effortful for them).  Click here to read on...

Sequoia

October was a month full of enriching activities.  The 6th year students learned about nature and developed leadership skills during their stay at Walker Creek Outdoor Ed.  The class field trip to the San Francisco Exploratorium gave us hands on experiences in Science.  The Tactile Dome was a big hit.  It challenged students to overcome fear of the dark and small spaces as they relied on only their sense of touch to guide them through a pitch-black maze.  Thanks to the generosity of Jeanine Ryan, the students had the pleasure of seeing local live theatre.  School House Rock entertained us with songs and dances as it taught about grammar, history and math.  The month ended with students giving back to the Sunrise community through hosting the Halloween Carnival.  Click here to read on...

Carnavale do Rio is hot hot hot!

We are in the midst of planning a fabulous auction/fundraiser to sizzle up your February!  Mark your calendars for February 25th, book your babysitter, and get ready for Rio!  Our in house chef de cuisine, Mel Oftedal, will prepare a delectable feast for you to dine on while you sip decadent wines from our first donations.  A big thank you to Michelle & Jamey Whetstone of Whetstone Cellars, Suzanne Groth of Groth wines, Cliff Lede Vineyards and Joanne and Marco Zaninovich of Rutherford Ranch for donating cases of wine for our dinner.  Also a big thank you to Dr. Steffensen, DDS and Paul & Meghan Krsek for sponsoring our teachers and staff this year. Donation request letters are being mailed this week.  If you have a personal connection to a certain business, please let me know, and we will have you personally follow up with that business.  The auction committee is always open to new ideas and new volunteers, so feel free to email me at lyndseymrichart@yahoo.com with any suggestions, donation ideas, or to give a little of your time!  See you at Carnavale do Rio!

Health & Safety
As flu season kicks into high gear and we are seeing more and more absences, we would like to remind parents
to keep your child at home if they are exhibiting signs of illness.  Your child must be fever free for 24 hours before they may return to school.  Always try to remember to call the office if your child is ill so that we can let the teachers know not to expect them!
Thank you!
